Wuli Wuli
Camberwell Church Street, SE5 (opposite Safa)
Camberwell Church Street, the gastronomic quarter of SE5, already had a much-lauded Xinjiang Chinese restaurant in the Silk Road. Now there is another contender for the crown. Szechuan restaurant Wuli Wuli is attractively decorated in black, with some Chinese-style pictures on the walls. On our visit, not long after the opening, staff were bright, cheerful and attentive. The short outside menu does not reflect the long list of interesting options really available; on sitting down, we were presented with a hefty menu which, the waitress explained, contained British-style Chinese food at the front, and Szechuan-style food at the back. We started with vegetable spring rolls to share. They were clearly freshly made, and crisp, though perhaps a little heavy on the batter versus filling ratio, and would have benefited from a dipping sauce. We improvised with the soy sauce provided in a dainty pourer. Next up we tried variations on their chow mein; one of us wanted it with bean curd, though this option was not on the menu. The waitress was completely accommodating and said meal was very tasty, though perhaps a little dry. Vegetable chow mein had a delicious texture with crunchy vegetables, but again seemed a little dry. At other tables, Chinese people were tucking in to large bowls of something delicious-looking and delicious-smelling, and we regretted not being more adventurous, and being scared off by the warning of spiciness in the ‘Chinese’ section of the menu. They have a short and sweet wine list; we were excited to come across a good Sancerre. After dinner, complementary fruit was produced, and was a delicious end to the meal.
