The Tiger

The Tiger is a much-welcome addition to Camberwell’s pub scene. Replacing the rather dodgy Silver Buckle, the new owners, who also own the East Dulwich Tavern, have restored the pub to its former glory. Indeed they had planned to call it something else until they peeled off the tacky modern boards and paint to find beautiful décor beneath, proclaiming it as The Tiger. And so The Tiger was reborn. A large pub in a prime location on the corner of the green, The Tiger is a place for people who like a proper pub, a bit like the Hermit’s Cave, but with a few extra frills, a touch more glamour, and background music. They have fantastic retro wallpaper and some quirky and eclectic wall decoration, vaguely evoking a post-war era vibe. However The Tiger manages to avoid the trying-too-hard feel, and pulls off the comfy and classy look with a laid back tone. The largest part of the pub is mainly filled by wooden chairs and tables, but also boasts sofas, and atmospheric twinkling tea light candles abound. Then there’s a lighter part of the pub with soft bench style seating, and a third area with chairs and tables, meaning that you can choose the right vibe for your visit. The staff are helpful and friendly, and indeed the clientele are too, which makes for a comfortable, cheery atmosphere. Art students abound. Drinks are on the high end of the reasonably priced spectrum and there is a fair range, including several draught beers and real ales. They’re about to start doing pub food too. The Tiger is a great place to hang out, with a welcome range of seating options to suit the mood. On Saturday night it was very full indeed (though they luckily have quite a lot of seating) And nobody so much as blinked at our blatantly gay-identifiable behaviour...
