Possibly the Camberwell venue in which one is most likely to stumble upon a gay contingent, The Castle is really more of a bar and music venue at night than a restaurant. However it does have a full menu, with excellent starters (the goats cheese bake and the bruschetta are especially recommended) and a good choice of mains (with mussels a speciality). The desserts are not to be ignored either and the delightfully creamy blackcurrant New York cheesecake is a particular pleasure. Renowned for its Sunday roasts, the Castle is always bustling with a friendly crowd enjoying the extensive wine list (with more than 22 wines sold by the glass) and good selection of real ales. The vibe is relaxed with good music, intimate booths and an open fire in winter. The decor is eclectic with chandeliers, fairy lights, a silent music video screen and regularly changing original art combining to produce a funky ambience. An absolute pleasure to visit day or night and a good bet for a Sunday roast before Pink Screen Sundays, which screens upstairs.
