This award-winning pub/restaurant/film/live music venue is a real local favourite for its wines, cocktails, wide range of spirits, beers, reliable food and the best beer garden in Camberwell (in front and out the back). With a range of seating options from bar tables to sofas to cosy booths in different areas of the bar, and some quirky decor including a regularly changing exhibition of art by local artists, the Sun and Doves has an informal, laid back atmosphere, where coffee drinkers (Fair trade), wine aficionados, beer drinkers and hungry diners are all simultaneously satisfied. Snacks and meals are ordered from the bar and brought to the table, and service is efficient and friendly. The menu is extensive and full of standard gastropub fayre which satisfies (particularly the generous helpings of nachos) and is reasonably priced. It’s worth checking the blackboard for the day’s specials, which often provide the tastiest option, though in terms of dessert, the rich and creamy banoffee pie deserves a special mention. The Sun and Doves is commendable both for its green ethic (it is aiming to become carbon neutral) and its nurturing of local talent (it shows art by local artists and has regular unsigned bands). Fine dining it is not, but if you seek a reasonable variety of food in an informal and comfortable setting, the Sun and Doves is a joy.
