I Can't Think Straight

Tala is all set to marry her boyfriend when she meets Leyla-a woman to whom she feels an irresistible attraction. On the surface, the two couldn't be more different--Tala is a Jordanian Christian and Leyla is a reserved Muslim-but their magnetic draw cannot be denied. As Tala's wedding looms, she must ask herself if she will risk everything for love.

20 Centimetres

Fans of Hedwig rejoice because 20 Centimetres is for you! Marieta/Adolfo is a pre-op transsexual who anticipates the day when she can be relieved of what’s topping her from being a woman. While Marieta’s waking life is a misery, it is during her dreams she finds her confidence and va-va-voom as a part of flamboyant musical numbers. 20 Centimetres is a riotous comedy with a decidedly Almodovaresque slant.

Salmonberries

Quirky but often moving film starring KD Lang. Set partly in the icy wastes of Alaska, partly in the wintry former no man's land of a newly reunified Berlin, it casts her as an orphaned Eskimo who hides his/her gender beneath layers of baggy clothes, and his/her emotional emptiness behind the scowling face of a Wild Child. Zech plays an exiled and widowed German librarian who befriends her and comes to terms, through their edgy relationship, with her own familial past.

A Love to Hide

A stirring drama that takes place in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1942. The story revolves around a gay male couple who must keep their love a secret for fear of persecution. Their lives are further complicated by the appearance of a young Jewish woman seeking refuge and the return of one of the men's brothers from prison. The resulting tale is one of love, trust, fear, and betrayal.

Another Country

Guy Bennett (Rupert Everett) and Tommy Judd (Colin Firth) are two handsome young men attending an English boarding school during the 1930's. Bennett falls in love with James Harcourt (Cary Elwes) and the pair embark on an affair, but disdain to conceal their mutual affection. The hypocrisy of the other boys attending the school, many of whom are also having affairs, eventually drives the couple to extreme measures. Judd meanwhile, finds that as a Marxist, his beliefs are in direct opposition to the role he is given a school prefect.

Show Me Love

Fourteen is still old enough to know there has to be something better than this. Firecracker blonde Dahlström rankles at being stuck in small town Åmål, but salvation comes from an unlikely corner when her path crosses with Liljeberg, the class swot, who just happens to be in love with her. A massive hit and multiple award winner in its native Sweden, this first feature adds a lesbian twist to the high school romance genre, neatly encapsulating the teenage frustration of waiting for your life to begin.

Bad Education

Almodóvar takes a look at his own adolescence as well as confronting the issue of sexual misconduct in the Catholic Church in this dark, sexy Hitchcock homage. The film visits three time periods. The past features the Catholic School where two young boys come of age and begin to have feelings for one another and the influence their teacher has on their lives, priest Father Manolo (played by Daniel Gimenez Cacho). The director Pedro Almodovar weaves the story through the 70s and 80s, and pre and post-Franco Spain.

The Castle screens free gay and lesbian themed films every Sunday afternoon at 5pm in their upstairs room. Pop along first to enjoy their Sunday roasts, or just grab a drink and head upstairs to sit back and enjoy the films.
