The Phoenix is an ever-changing beast. One of our party associates it with work, being that a large number of nurses and doctors from the Maudsley and Kings College Hospitals flock into the bar for after-work drinks. Another associates it with commuting, being that it is located conveniently inside Denmark Hill station. Another has no commuting nor work connotations and simply sees it as a good local bar. However, everyone is agreed on the fact that The Phoenix is a very pleasant place to have a drink. With an extensive wine list (including some excellent mulled wine in winter) along with 15 draught beers/ciders, a wide selection of bottled beer, and several real ales, The Phoenix caters well for thirsty customers, even providing a variety of interesting juices for the designated driver. The atmosphere is convivial and the crowd is varied. However one of The Phoenix’s finest boasts is its beautiful architecture including a high ceiling, huge old original station clock and an original wrought iron staircase. This is juxtaposed with some more quirky décor (for instance the multiple mirror wall in the women’s toilets) and a combination of booths, tables, and sofas. Bustling just after work, with customers spilling out onto the outside tables, The Phoenix has a more relaxed vibe on weekends, with people tucking into excellent Sunday roasts, playing boardgames, and reading the weekend papers. The Phoenix is a bar with something for everyone, and is one of Camberwell's best bars at the moment.
