Joiners Arms
35 Denmark Hill SE5 8RS
Tel: 0207 703 4756

Joiners Arms would be rather attractive if not so ramshackle and slightly intimidating, and it was pretty quiet until it inherited the clientele from the somewhat dodgy Silver Buckle, which gives it a distinctly gay-unfriendly vibe, though some people enjoy the pub for being laid back, and some of the staff are gay-friendly. It screens the football, has student drinks deals, and is Camberwell’s only venue with a pool table and a jukebox. Pit bull terriers roam around, and a few people in advanced states of inebriation can be found slumped in corners or leaning against the bar. Beer is reasonably cheap. Wine comes in individual-sized bottles and is best avoided. They have a nice range of crisps etc. And a devoted set of drinkers. The Joiner’s Arms is not pretentious, and is appreciated by some people seeking a ‘real South London pub’. It has a lovely tiled mural in the front room. For a while they tried hosting Gay Camberwell’s comedy night in their back room; this was discontinued due to difficulties with their regular clientele leading to poor attendance. Joiner’s Arms is worth a try if you like that sort of pub.

NB not to be mistaken for the gay-friendly pub of the same name in North London.
