George Canning

Some describe the George Canning as Camberwell’s best pub.  We would say that it is Camberwell’s most disappointing venue.  So much has been got right: friendly and helpful staff, an interesting menu (and providing one of the best brunches in Camberwell), a reasonable wine list and pleasant decor.  But all these qualities do not make a perfect bar, because the trick is in the atmosphere, and that is something the George Canning has got wrong. Or at least, wrong unless you happen to be “one of the ladz” in which case the pub is probably just what you’re looking for. The clientele is largely composed of the early 30s, football-loving, overweight, loud, lager-swilling, male variety, and on both occasions we have visited, this has resulted in an uncomfortable, disruptive atmosphere, leading us to flee (admittedly, on the second occasion, only after having consumed the really very good food).  ‘Tis a pity.  And George Canning would not have been proud.
