Possibly the Camberwell venue in which one is most likely to stumble upon a gay contingent, The Castle is one of Camberwell’s best bars, always bustling with a friendly crowd enjoying the extensive wine list (with more than 22 wines sold by the glass) and good selection of real ales. The vibe is relaxed by day, with a wide selection of music, intimate booths, sofas, newspapers, and an open fire in winter. Candles flicker on tables in the evenings, creating a venue that is equally suitable for romance or a night out with friends. The tempo steps up a gear on Friday and Saturday nights with live DJs til 3:30am (the reviewers still think fondly of our first night dancing cheek-to-cheek). The Castle’s decor is eclectic with chandeliers, fairy lights, a silent music video screen and regularly changing original art combining to produce a funky ambience. Best of all, the Castle is home to Camberwell’s monthly gay book group and Sunday afternoon free screenings of gay films, and is enthusiastic about hosting further gay-themed events. This is surely one of the most gay-friendly bars in Camberwell, and an absolute pleasure to visit day or night.
